Fresh Tastes Booster Program

Applications are being accepted now!

What is Fresh Tastes @ School?
The NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy branded as the Fresh Tastes @ School Strategy seeks to ensure that foods of minimal nutritional value are offered infrequently and that more nutritious foods and drinks are readily available and promoted in school canteens. The overarching goal of the strategy is to ensure that all schools provide a canteen service that is consistent with the Australian Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents.

What is the Booster Program?
The Fresh Tastes@ School Booster Program is a new four-year program that will help schools requiring further assistance to fully implement the Fresh Tastes Strategy. Funded through the Australian Better Health Initiative: A joint Australian, State and Territory government initiative, the Fresh Tastes Booster Program will be delivered by the Healthy Kids School Canteen Association, on behalf of NSW Health. The Fresh Tastes @ School Booster Program aims to build the capacity of the whole school community to sustain a healthy school canteen food service and to support and empower identified schools with skills and knowledge to run a well-managed successful healthy school canteen consistent with the Fresh Tastes @ School Strategy. Up to 100 high schools will be entered into the program over 4 years.

What will the Booster Program Include?
• A comprehensive diagnostic of the school canteen, which will include:
- Canteen management
- Canteen menu
- Canteen policy
- Classroom links
- Promotion of healthy foods
- Food safety and hygiene
• Consultation with parents, staff, students and volunteers in each participating school to determine the level of satisfaction, and identify issues and opportunities in relation to the school canteen.
• An individualised action plan developed for each school to ensure the minimum standards of the Strategy will be achieved over the course of the Program.
• Ongoing professional, personalised assistance to implement the strategy.
• Personalised training for canteen staff, volunteers and teachers.
• Provision of support tools and resources.
• Encouraging linkage with a canteen network.

How Can my School Apply?
High schools having difficulties applying the Fresh Tastes Strategy across NSW will be invited to nominate for the program through an expression of interest process. The program will have 3 intakes per year. An Expression of Interest (EOI) application form will be sent to all high schools in NSW. To be selected for the program schools will need to meet the Selection Criteria as outlined in the EOI.

4 Year-Old Lunchbox Ideas

My 4 year old daughter is a fussy eater and all she wants for her packed lunch is cheese and cucumber sandwiches or egg mayo sandwiches. Trying to get her to eat any other filling results in her bringing the whole thing back home uneaten. Keen to get some other ideas and how to get her to expand her tastes.
