Fruit ‘n’ Veg Month is brought to you by Sydney Markets, Healthy Kids Association and Cancer Council in 2010.

In 2009 Fruit ‘n’ Veg Week was bigger and better than ever!

Fruit ‘n’ Veg Week was celebrated 7th – 11th September 2009 (Term 3 Week 7)

Healthy Kids SCA and Cancer Council NSW again worked together to bring you the tools to made Fruit ‘n’ Veg Week 2009 an event to remember. Fruit ‘n’ Veg Week was celebrated in week 7 of term 3 and was a roaring success with schools across NSW taking the opportunity to teach and learn about fruit and vegetables in the classroom, sell fruit and vegetables from the canteen or from stalls, and to create exciting taste sensations at home.

Environmental concerns were the flavour of the week in some schools.  Newbridge Heights Public School placed an emphasis on composting, and Cringila Public School held a No-Waste Wednesday, where students were encouraged to only bring foods without packaging and snack on fruit and vegetables.

Canteens also got creative in celebration of the event with snacks such as apple slinkies, salsa dippers and gifts with purchase. Shelley from Wollondilly Public School Canteen made a fruit and veg zoo complete with fruit and veg animals and rangers.

In the class room students were encouraged to learn about fruit and vegetables through colouring in, the decoration of chatterboxes and by using flash cards which were all provided in the official Fruit ‘n’ Veg Week Kits. Many exciting and creative entries have also been received for the lunch box and postage stamp competitions.

Some schools took the event to the next level, making Fruit ‘n’ Veg week their own. The Meadow’s Public School held their own Fruit ‘n’ Veg Olympics allowing the children to actively get involved in group activities and learn about fruit and veg through touch, smell and taste. Check out their You Tube video below.

“On the whole, it appears that Fruit ‘n’ Veg Week 2009 was an overwhelming success”, said Fruit ‘n’ Veg Week Co-ordinator, Lyndal Wellard.  “It’s inspiring to see how creative schools have been in celebrating the event”, she said.

Healthy Kids SCA is interested in hearing any feedback you may have about Fruit ‘n’ Veg Week 2009. Call 9876 1300 or 1300 724 850 (outside Sydney Metro) or email info@healthy-kids.com.au with your feedback and suggestions for 2010.
