Rosanne Kelly – Inaburra School, Bangor

Lynn Sunderland – Peel High School, Tamworth

Cheryl Lynch – Ettalong Public School

The runner-up in this category was awarded to Cheryl Lynch from Ettalong Public School

Cheryl started volunteering at Ettalong Primary School in 1995 and later that year became the paid Canteen Manager. John Tily, President of the School’s P&C believes that Cheryl should win this award because she passionately fills the menu with foods that meet Fresh Tastes, regularly attends courses on food safety and preparation and attends the Healthy Kids Annual Exhibition and Training Day. Over the past 15 years she has introduced several initiatives to improve healthy eating including a low GI breakfast program which provides breakfast for up to 75 students a day.

The winner of the Canteen Manager of the Year (Paid) was Jenny Fox from Ross Hill Public School, Inverell

Jenny has been involved with the Ross Hill Public School Canteen for 30 years.  The canteen adheres to the Fresh Tastes @ School Strategy, and prepares fresh, healthy foods each day. Fiona Thompson, President of the Canteen Committee nominated Jenny as she makes so much effort to link the school to the canteen through events such as Healthy Kids School Canteen Day. Jenny’s most recent project has been building gardens for the children to plant vegetables. Congratulations Jenny, you are an inspiration and we thank you for making healthy choices for the students at your school.

Volunteer Roster Worker finalists were:

Cassey Parker – Tuggerah Public School and

Leyla Nassif – Rozelle Public School

The runner-up in this category is Leyla Nassif.

Dina Kalaitzakis, Canteen Manager at Rozelle Public School has nominated Leyla as she does everything she can to help out at the canteen. In addition to being on the roster twice a week, Leyla pops into the canteen whenever she is on the school grounds. “Leyla calls me when she is at the shops to ask if I need anything, she serves at the canteen window, drops by to make sandwiches and jaffles and always offers to do more.”

The winner in the Category of Volunteer Roster Worker is Cassey Parker from Tuggerah Public School.

Cassey has been nominated by Melissa Laver, Canteen Manager at Tuggerah Public School. Melissa says that Cassey is “reliable, responsible, honest, warm and friendly.” In the ten years she has been volunteering, Cassey has seen many managers come and go but is always there looking for new ways to introduce ‘green’ foods. Melissa says that “Cassey works tirelessly and nothing is ever a problem.”

Volunteer Committee Member finalists were:

Wendy Firth – Berry Public School

Tracy McGrath – Wauchope Public School

Rose Smith – Brisbania Public School, Saratoga

Lorne Siems - Duval High School, Armidale

Stephanie Hedgman – Lisarow Public School

Ros Parker – Woy Woy South Public School

Melisa Seaton – Rozelle Public School

In this category the judges could not decide on a winner and runner-up, so two volunteer committee members have been selected to take the Equal First prize.

The first of these was Ros Parker from Woy Woy South Public School

Ros has been involved with the Woy Woy Public School Canteen for the past 35 years! Ros was an unpaid Canteen Supervisor while her children attended the school and even though she has paid employment elsewhere, she continues her volunteer work as the Woy Woy South Public School canteen treasurer.

The other winner in this category was Wendy Firth from Berry Public School

Since Wendy started working at the Berry Public School Canteen in January 2008 she has taken the canteen from the brink of closure to a financially viable canteen, fully compliant with Fresh Tastes. Lucie Stanford, secretary of the P&C, nominated Wendy because she has introduced policies and procedures, has substantially reduced waste and has trialled innovative new ideas such as loyalty cards.
