Crunch&Sip®

Crunch&Sip® is a break in primary schools for students to ‘refuel’ on fruit and salad
vegetables and ‘rehydrate’ with water, assisting physical and mental performance
and concentration.

Why Crunch&Sip®?

Many students are not eating enough fruit and vegetables for general health. Eating
a diet rich in fruits and vegetables will promote normal growth in children and protect
them against disease later in life.
Crunch&Sip® also has benefits for the academic performance, concentration and
behaviour of students. Students that are not hungry and are well hydrated perform
better in the classroom, and are less likely to be irritable and disruptive.
Crunch&Sip® takes a ‘whole of school’ approach, with the program incorporated into
school policy. Registered schools also receive a
Crunch&Sip® resource pack, which
incorporates the healthy eating message into the classroom and reinforces the
principles of
Crunch&Sip®. The pack contains:

  • Nutrition and health curriculum materials (developed by DET) to fit the NSW
    primary school PDHPE curriculum
  • Background nutrition information for teachers
  • The ‘A-Z of Fruit and Veg’ resource for teachers and activities for students
  • An electronic (CD) version of the resources

Schools that register are also recognised on the NSW Crunch&Sip® website

Links with other school programs

Schools can combine Crunch&Sip® with other programs they may have running in
the school – such as the Fresh Tastes @ School strategy in the canteen or
environmental programs. For example, the canteen can support
Crunch&Sip® by
serving apple slinkies to students during their
Crunch&Sip® break. Or the fruit and
vegetable waste generated during
Crunch&Sip® can be used in a worm farm or as
compost for a school vegetable garden.
