Diet Affects Academic Performance: Children with healthier diets do better in school
Another study of school children has shown a correlation between diet and academic performance at school. Eating a nutritious diet in the right quantities has a positive effect on performance while a diet high in fat, sugar and too little fruit, vegetables and grains has a negative impact on attention span and performance.
A nutritious diet adopted from a young age will not only improve academic performance but also improve long-term health.
Food eaten out of the lunch box at school makes up a big portion of food eaten throughout the day so be sure to pack it full of nutrition. A healthy diet should include at least 4 serves of grain foods, vegetables, fruit, dairy products, meat fish and poultry.

A Picture of Australia’s Children
Last week, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) released a new report into the health of Australian children titled “A picture of Australia’s children”. The report compares the actual health of Australian children aged 0-14 years compared to wide range of key national indicators of health, development and wellbeing, including health status, education, family environments, safety and security. 'Fresh Tastes Strategy Under Threat' - Not true says Healthy Kids SCA
Although some reports have outlined that the war against child obesity is 'faltering and threatening collapse', other sources say that the opposite is actually occurring with the Healthy Kids School Canteen Association and the food industry working together to develop products lower in fat, salt, sugar and kilojoules.
A recent Daily Telegraph report said that the Fresh Tastes @ School Healthy Canteen Strategy was under threat by the re-emergence of pies, sausage rolls and pizzas.
Jennifer Madz, a dietitian at Healthy Kids SCA says "I think it's fair to say that the humble meat pie and sausage roll never actually left the canteen menu. They have simply been modified by food industry to meet the State's Guidelines." read more
