Suggested Steps to a Healthy Canteen
Becoming a successfully run healthy canteen involves not only changing the foods sold but also involves a number of canteen management†strategies. Healthy Kids aims to support and encourage school communities at different stages of this change. Parents, students, teachers, the principal and canteen workers are all key players in ensuring the canteen is a healthy and successful food service.
1. Become a member of the Healthy Kids for information, updates, support and encouragement!
2. Gather members of your school community to form a Canteen Committee.
3. Develop a healthy School Canteen Policy.
4. Gather information on Food safety and hygiene in the canteen for workers and volunteers.
5. Examine your Canteen Menu to ensure it complies with the Fresh Tastes @ School NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy.
6. Promote healthy foods to students, staff and parents.
7. Ensure school community involvement by promoting and increasing the profile of the canteen.
8. Link nutrition messages taught in the classroom with what is being sold in the canteen.
